Ever felt like your learning analytics aren’t telling the whole story? Like you’re seeing clicks and completions—but missing the real signs of engagement?

That’s where xAPI and AI come into play. I had the honour of presenting this exact topic at ILP Asia Pacific’s LnD Week. We dug into how digital body language can help us understand not just what learners are doing, but how they’re feeling and engaging with content.

What is Digital Body Language?

Think of it like this: just as body language in a face-to-face session shows interest, confusion, or boredom, digital body language reflects the same—through clicks, pauses, rewinds, skipped content, and more.

With xAPI (the Experience API), we can capture these rich behavioural signals from across multiple platforms—not just your LMS. Video, VR, forums, H5P… if it’s digital, we can track it.

Then we bring in AI to spot patterns, identify drop-off points, and even predict learner outcomes. Tools like xapiai.com help us get right into the xAPI Learning Record Store (LRS) and start analysing behaviours like:

• Who rewinds videos the most?

• Who’s watching in full-screen?

• Who’s dropping off before the end?

• Are there moments when learners hesitate or hover over the close button?

These are goldmines for digital learning designers.

Try It Yourself

Want to see it in action?

🎬 Check out the interactive video demo and track your own digital body language in real time.

📊 Then head to xapiai.com to pull raw xAPI data from the LRS and load it into ChatGPT with a custom GPT I’ve created just for this purpose. Full step-by-step instructions, prompts, LRS details and and tools are available in the resource pack (PDF) from the session.

Why This Matters

As learning designers and digital educators, our job is to understand our learners—and not just from a final score or module completion. xAPI helps us see the full picture, and AI helps us interpret it.

If you’re still relying solely on LMS reports, it might be time to think outside the LMS and break down the garden walls.

Let’s make learning measurable, personal, and genuinely data-driven.
